Canadian ownership considerations
General things worth checking on a used Grand Cherokee in the Canadian climate — winter, road salt, and cold-weather wear.
- Check AWD or 4WD operation if equipped — driveline components are costly to repair.
- Road salt drives corrosion on underbody and subframe points; inspect the undercarriage on salt-belt vehicles.
- Verify heater, defroster, and rear demister all work ahead of winter.
- Battery and cold-start reliability are worth confirming for Canadian winters.
Pre-purchase inspection priorities
- Bring a qualified mechanic or book an independent pre-purchase inspection.
- Check the undercarriage for rust and corrosion, especially on salt-belt vehicles.
- Confirm all open recalls have been repaired using the VIN.
- Review maintenance records and look for gaps in servicing.
- Test all winter-critical systems: heater, defroster, battery, and (if equipped) AWD/4WD.

Structure
2016-09-22On certain vehicles, the tow hook or tow eye bracket fasteners may not have been tightened to specification at time of assembly. A loose tow hook or tow eye bracket may separate from the vehicle while driving or during vehicle recovery, which could result in injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will inspect and confirm both tow hook bracket fasteners are tightened to specification.
Airbag
2016-10-28On certain vehicles, the driver’s knee airbag inflator may have been assembled with an improper weld. Failure of the airbag to fully deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will replace the knee airbag assembly.
Label
2017-08-31Certain vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 110 - Tire Selection and Rims. The certification label may not include tire and rim size information as required by the standard. This could lead to the wrong tire and rim size being used, which could potentially affect vehicle handling and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the certification label.
Engine
2018-05-17On certain vehicles, an electronic fault may create a situation where the cruise control cannot be deactivated. If this occurs and the driver does not apply the brakes or shift the transmission to neutral, the vehicle could maintain speed or accelerate without warning, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software and perform an update as necessary. Note: In the interim, owners are advised not to use the cruise control until the vehicle is repaired.
Other
2019-08-21Issue: This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Powertrain
2020-06-12Issue: On certain vehicles with a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU), the input splines on the front differential may wear and fail. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels. In addition, the PARK position may not hold the vehicle in place. This could allow the vehicle to move unexpectedly when parked. Safety Risk: A vehicle that loses power to the wheels or moves unexpectedly could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the power transfer unit. This update will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheels if the input splines fail. It will also prevent the vehicle from moving unexpectedly when transmission is in PARK by activating the parking brake.

If this happens, the engine could stall and you may not be able to restart it. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the powertrain control module. This update will help maintain engine power if the crankshaft position signal is lost.
Engine
2020-11-12Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a 3.0-L EcoDiesel engine, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler could crack internally and leak. If this happens, a driver may notice a low coolant level or a heater that does not work properly. Safety Risk: A cracked EGR cooler could create the risk of an engine fire. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the EGR cooler. Dealers will also inspect intake manifold and replace it as necessary.
Fuel System
2022-06-09Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a 3.0 L diesel engine, the high-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, you may notice a change in engine performance, a fuel leak, or a malfunction indicator lamp and/or service electronic throttle control tell-tale may turn on. This could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the high-pressure fuel pump. Additional fuel system parts may be replaced, if necessary.
Powertrain
2023-04-27Issue: On certain vehicles with a two-speed power transfer unit (PTU), the input splines on the front differential may wear and fail. Note: This is an expansion of recall W47 (Transport Canada recall 2020-261). Safety Risk: A vehicle that loses power to the wheels or moves unexpectedly could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the power transfer unit. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the powertrain control module. This update will help maintain engine power if the crankshaft position signal is lost.
Label
2024-08-15Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire and loading information label does not list that there is no spare tire in both official languages. The label reads as "NONE" when it should read as "NONE / AUCUN". Canadian regulations require the information to be listed on the label in both English and French. Safety Risk: This error does not affect vehicle safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has corrected the tire and loading information label for all new vehicles.
Powertrain
2025-01-16Issue: On certain vehicles, the input shaft snap ring in the power transfer unit (PTU) may not have been installed properly. As a result, the PTU could become damaged and fail. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels and/or the vehicle could move when it's parked and the parking brake isn't applied. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with a two-speed PTU. Safety Risk: A loss of power to the wheels or a parked vehicle that moves suddenly could create the risk of an injury and/or a crash. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the drivetrain control module and install a diagnostic software that will monitor the PTU and warn you if it detects a problem. If you see this warning, you should contact a dealership to arrange for the replacement of the PTU.
